MELBOURNE, Australia – The Melbourne Ice hosted a double-header this weekend with the Newcastle North Stars. The brace of games ended with each side taking three points for their efforts.
On Saturday, the North Stars got a goal from Connor McLaughlin midway through the third period to post a 3-2 win over their hosts. It was McLaughlin’s second goal of the game; he had three points in the game.
Newcastle managed a goal in each period despite being outshot 38-30 for the game.
The Ice took a 1-0 and 2-1 lead in the game but were not able to hold the advantage.
The two teams squared off on Sunday and the script started off eerily similar with the Ice taking a 1-0 lead on a goal from Chris Yule.
The Stars responded with two of their own in the opening frame to take a 2-1 lead to the intermission. But that was it for Newcastle as the Ice rallied with goals in each of the next two periods to take a 3-2 win.
Yule scored his second of the game in the on the power play to give the Ice the win.
