PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Ice Flyers lose two-goal lead, fall 3-2 in shootout

PENSACOLA, Fla. – On January 24, the Pensacola Ice Flyers (17-11-2) fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Macon Mayhem (12-14-3).

After 15 minutes of game time and a lengthy delay due to a broken pane of glass, the Ice Flyers got the scoring started when Adam Pawlick found Cody Dion camped out in the slot on a power play. After Dion settled the puck, he fired the shot in on a screened Garrett Bartus that found the back of the net. Dion’s third goal of the season came with 4:09 left in the first period and Pawlick had the only assist. Less than two minutes later, Corey Banfield batted in his own rebound from right outside the crease to put the Ice Flyers up 2-0. Linemates Mark Rivera and Joe Caveney had the helpers.

The second period was a scoreless affair. The third period was where the Mayhem made their comeback. Shawn Skelly scored a power play goal 9:33 into the third to cut the Ice Flyers’ lead down to 2-1. Stephen Pierog tied the game with 3:55 remaining in regulation.

After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the teams headed to a shootout. Caveney scored in the first round, but Macon’s Michael Wills tied it in the fifth round. Caveney and Nick Grasso scored in the sixth then Caveney and Skelly scored in the seventh. In the eighth round Skelly converted, but Bartus stopped Caveney to secure the win.

McLean stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced in regulation and the overtime and four of the eight shots he faced in the shootout.
