
PENSACOLA, FL. – On Friday, January 2, the Pensacola Ice Flyers dominated the Mississippi RiverKings and won by a final score of 7-1 in front of a crowd of 6,420 on the first of two nights that featured five dollar seats at the Pensacola Bay Center.
In the course of two minutes and twenty-six seconds the Ice Flyers managed to put four pucks past Peter Di Salvo beginning with a power play goal from Nick Lazorko at the 8:25 mark and additional goals from Michael Budd, Corey Banfield and Brett Lutes soon after. Mississippi’s Leo Thomas gave the RiverKings a chance to stay in the game with a goal at 17:01 as the period would end with a 4-1 lead in favor of Pensacola.
Luke Warner was looking to put some fire under his team early in the second as he squared off with Pensacola’s Brandon Blair 1:37 into the period. However, the only goal of the period came from the Ice Flyers’ captain, Brett Lutes, at the 8:22 mark for his second of the game.
The momentum carried on into the third period as the leading scorer in the SPHL, Adam Pawlick, made it a 6-1 game just 1:55 in. It was the local favorite, Second Lieutenant Jason Fabian, who gave the Ice Flyers their final score at the 15:20 mark and Pensacola would finish the game with a huge 7-1 victory over Mississippi.
Max Strang had a very strong night in net for Pensacola stopping 29 of 30 shots. At the other end, Di Salvo managed to turn away 31 of 38 shots faced.
The three stars of the game all went to Pensacola; third star to Lazorko (1 goal, 2 assists), second star Lutes (2 goals, 1 assist) and the first star went to Budd (1 goal, 3 assists).
