
PENSACOLA, Fla. – On January 23, The Pensacola Ice Flyers (17-11-1) couldn’t figure out the Macon Mayhem (12-16-3) and goalie Garrett Bartus as the Mayhem downed the Ice Flyers 5-1 in front of 5,217 inside the Pensacola Bay Center on Wiener Dog Race Night.
Macon broke the scoreless tie with Josh Ranalli’s fourth goal of the season 8:44 into the first period. About five minutes later, the Mayhem doubled their lead with a goal by Stephen Pierog that came off a rebound given up by Pensacola goalie John McLean. With 1:18 left in the period, Anton Lessenarton scored a breakaway goal. After the third goal, Spencer McLay replaced McLean in net.
Macon’s Shawn Skelly pushed the lead to 4-0 when he scored with 16.2 seconds remaining in the second period. The Ice Flyers’ comeback attempt started to bear fruit 7:21 into the third when Joe Caveney put home a juicy rebound with Bartus sprawled on the ice. Drew Baker and Mark Rivera assisted on the marker. With McLay pulled for an extra attacker with more than three minutes left, Jake Trask was on the receiving end of a stretch pass and put the puck in the empty net to put Macon up 5-1.
McLean was the goalie of record and stopped nine of 12 shots. McLay stopped nine of the ten shots he faced.
