
HUNTSVILLE, AL – Jeff Jones scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Huntsville Havoc picked up the extra point in a 2-1 (2-1 SO) win over the Columbus Cottonmouths.
The shootout lasted for 10 attempts between the teams. Columbus got a shootout goal from Tyler Henry. Huntsville’s other shootout goal was scored by Dylan Nowakowski.
The Havoc’s Kevin Genoe was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 26 saves and let only one puck past him. Genoe managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 2.87 prior to the game.
Huntsville forced the Cottonmouths goalie Brandon Jaeger to work between the pipes, taking 34 shots.
The Havoc were helped by Kyle McNeil, who had one goal. McNeil scored 4:14 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Huntsville. Stuart Stefan picked up the assist. Other players who recorded assists for Huntsville were Taylor Bourne, who had one.
Columbus excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. By firing 27 shots on goal, the Cottonmouths exceeded the 21.4 shots they average per game this year.
Columbus was led by Chris Rial, who scored the team’s only goal. Rial scored 9:01 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Alex Pompeo assisted on the tally.
Huntsville incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Cottonmouths’ Jaeger stopped 32 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Columbus incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
