COLUMBUS, GA – Even when they are going in separate directions in the standings, all bets are off when it comes to rivalry games. That was the case on Saturday, March 28th when the Huntsville Havoc looked to exact some revenge on the Columbus Cottonmouths and got it.
Led by the stellar goaltending of Kevin Genoe, the Havoc shutout Columbus 2-0 to put a cap on what has been a disappointing season for the team from Alabama.
Facing off against Columbus’ Andrew Loewen, Genoe was the major story in the game as he stopped all 51 shots that the Cottonmouths threw at him. The barrage was constant as Columbus registered 18 shots in the first period, 17 in the second and another 16 in the third. Genoe’s biggest save mave have been the one he made late in the second period when he denied Columbus’ Levi Lind on a penalty shot.
The Havoc got the only goal they would need late in the first period. It came when Justin Cseter and Jacob Johnstone were able to get the puck to Jordan Reed who beat Loewen at the 14:45 mark of the frame.
After a scoreless middle stanza, Huntsville bumped its lead to two when Jason McAloon scored 13:12 into the final period. Assists on the tally were credited to Bobby Barrett and Justin Tateson.
Loewen finished the game with 18 saves in the loss. Columbus, which climbed into the second seed for the upcoming President’s Cup playoffs after a poor start, will face another arch-rival in the Knoxville Ice Bears when the post season begins on Thursday night in Knoxville (the lower seed hosts the first game in the best-of-three series).
For the Havoc, they can hang their hats on a positive end to their season and look forward to the 2015-2016 campaign.
