SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Diego Gulls (4-0-0-0) continued their winning streak when John Gibson earned his first shutout of the season in the 3-0 win at SAP Center against the San Jose Barracuda (2-2-0-1).
Stu Bickel and Vincent Arseneau set the tone with a glove dropping match less than two minutes into the game.
Gulls’ Chris Wagner scored the first goal of the game at 5:02, when his shot from near the blue line went past Aaron Dell in the net. Their second goal came off the stick of Chris Mueller with 1:49 remaining in the first, giving the Gulls the 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
Nick Ritchie gave the Gulls their third goal during the second period, on a power play, when he wristed a shot into the net from the front of the net.
The Barracuda were not able to make anything else happen, but held the Gulls at three goals by the end of the game.
Barracuda coach Roy Sommer wasn’t very pleased with his teams overall playing during the game.
“I thought our neutral zone wasn’t real good. They were pouring through it at times. There was no stand. They came in there too easy.”
When asked where the game may have gone wrong, he said, “The power play was the turning point in the game. We had two good looks and they made two great saves on us. We maybe had seven or eight scoring chances. But we couldn’t get anything going offensively.” He added later, “There’s still plenty of stuff to work on. We would like to get a home win here.”
The Barracuda left after the game to head down to Ontario for another tough match, to face the Reign, also undefeated (4-0-0-0) on Saturday night.
