SHEFFIELD, UK – Steelers played their best game of the season in an epic encounter against the top of the table Belfast Giants, going down 4-2 on Saturday evening.
It’s been a long time since there was such a hard fought encounter at the Arena, with both sides having to do it all again tomorrow (4.00pm face off).
It was end to end stuff with the Giants having the best of the first period, David Rutherford scoring the only goal of the session at 12.20.
Steelers were outstanding in the middle period, dominating the play and levelling the score when Dowd and Westerling combined for a powerplay goal at 24.55
Francis Beauvillier put the Giants 2-1 up at 41.46.
Belfast looked like they had wrapped it up in the 50th minute with the impressive Blair Riley scoring a 3rd
Steelers never gave up though and whilst shorthanded Eric Neiley broke away and was hauled down in front of goal – a penalty shot was awarded – Neiley confidently slotted home for 2-3
Goalie Matt Climie was pulled for the extra attacker in the final 2 minutes, Steelers couldn’t find a way to score the equaliser and it was the Giants who found the empty net through Darcy Murphy for a 4-2 final score line.
