PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Francis, Mallards down Jackals in OT 3-2

MOLINE, Ill. (Feb. 11) – Chris Francis scored at 1:41 of overtime to give the host Quad City Mallards (27-18-2) a 3-2 victory over the Elmira Jackals (9-33-6) Saturday night and extend the Mallards’ winning streak to six games.

Francis, who had picked up an assist earlier in the game, snapped home the game winner from the high slot.

The Jackals did earn one point by battling back from a 2-0 deficit to force sudden death with a pair of Kenton Miller goals. Miller got Elmira on the scoreboard for the first time from the side of the net at 14:58 of the second period. The Jackals were on the power play when he shoveled home the tying goal from close range at 7:41 of the third period.

The Mallards had emerged from the opening period with a 1-0 lead but also headed into the first intermission short two players. By the time Brady Brassart scored the opening goal with each team down a man by burying a rebound with just 45 seconds left in the first, the Mallards had already lost forward Jack Nevins and defenseman Alex Gudbranson to game misconduct penalties. Both banished Mallards were assessed misconducts for being the aggressor in an altercation. The Mallard lead doubled when Michael Parks scored another 4-on-4 goal with a blast from the left point just 52 seconds into the second period, but the undermanned Mallards would not hold that advantage.

By recovering in overtime, the Mallards claimed a sixth straight victory for the first time since they won the final six games of the 2005-06 United Hockey League regular season between April 5 and April 15, 2006.
