NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas – The Brahmas defeated the Quad City Mallards 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday night behind a strong performance between the posts by goaltender Kristofer Westblom.
The Mallards got the scoring started at the 12:14 mark of the first period when Brett Robinson found the back of the net off of a delayed Brahmas penalty, giving Quad City a 1-0 lead. Midway through the second period, the Brahmas got back in the game as Austin Mayer was taken down from behind on his way to the net and was awarded a penalty shot. Mayer made the Mallards pay as he fired a wrister over the shoulder of Quad City netminder John Murray and into the net. The score was the first professional goal of the rookie winger’s career. Despite some good scoring opportunities for each team down the stretch of regulation and into overtime, the game headed to a shootout tied at one goal apiece. Phil Fox, who was named Oakley CHL Player of the Week on Monday, caught Murray leaning and scored easily on the Brahmas’ third attempt of the shootout. Tomas Klempa beat Murray in the fifth round of the shootout, sealing the deal for Fort Worth. Fox is credited with the goal in the shootout, his third game-winner in the last four games. Westblom was stingy in net in his first regular-season start for the Brahmas, making 22 saves on 23 shots and stopping all four attempts he faced in the shootout. The Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan native earned his first win of the season, just hours after signing a five-game contract. Murray was also impressive in goal, stopping 20 of 21 Brahmas shots through regulation and overtime. The six-year veteran falls to 3-1-3 on the season.
