PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Dunlops outlast Real McCoys, 9-8

Despite a 52-30 edge in shots, the Whitby Dunlops needed a last minute goal by Kyle McLaughlin to seal a 9-8 victory over the Dundas Real McCoys on Friday night. The win extended the Dunnie record for the month of November to 5 wins and 2 losses, vaulting them in to second place ahead of the Hamilton Steelhawks, and one point behind the League leading Stoney Creek Generals. In this contest the Whitby squad had to battle back from deficits the entire night with an incredible effort, with all four lines contributing throughout.

The Dunnies got some bad news in that newly acquired goaltender Nathan Perry decided to sigh a contract with Fayetteville in the southern pro League, pressing Davis Blair in to action. Blair made some big stops near the end of the contest to allow Whitby forwards to press and ultimately be rewarded. Dundas goaltender Mike Mole was severely tested throughout facing 17 shots in each of the first two periods and 20 in the final frame.
While the scoring was spread throughout each lineup, Jason Dale (2G, 2A) produced a 4 point night only to be matched by Dundas’ Simon Mangos with 2 goals and 2 assists. For Whitby, Tyler Melancon (1 G,2 A) and Kyle McLaughlin (1G, 2A),contributed 3 point nights, but on this night Dundas’ Charlie Stephens (2G, 1A), and Jason Williams (2G, 1A) matched. It turned out to be a typical “last shot wins” game, but provided real excitement for the Dundas locals.
Matt Baxter, Darren Doherty, Tyler Melancon, Brett McConnachie and Chris Porter ( 2 goals) were the other Dunlop scorers. In the end, the 3 stars were Jason Dale ( first), Simon Mangos ( second) and Mike Mole ( third). Exciting hockey, but too many goals against for each club, a stat that surely be corrected in short order.
