PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Drexel Defeats Navy In Shootout Thriller

ANNAPOLIS, MD: Friday, October 1, 2021 was the home opener for the Naval Academy Midshipmen at McMullen Arena at the Brigade Sports Complex. Unfortunately for the home team, the Drexel Dragons defeated them in a tightly fought contest that took all three periods, plus overtime and a shootout to determine the winner.

The story of the game was the goaltending, as Navy’s Charles Doherty saved 54 of 56 shots, while his Drexel counterpart Logan Kramsky made 22 saves on 24 shots.

Drexel opened the scoring in the first period when Nick Castura scored with assists from Jarrett Ortiz and Jimmy Bell with 14:41 gone in the period.

Navy would even the score in the second period on a power play goal by Nathan Hyden with 10:14 remaining. Mike Rockovich and Brendan Reynolds would get the assists.

Early in the third period, with 18:54 remaining, it would be Navy’s Reynolds, with a power play goal from Jack Mullen and Joe Walton.

The lead would last for the next 13 minutes and 50 seconds when Drexel’s Ryan Sambuco would score with an assist from Castura.

Drexel went first in the shootout. In the first round, both shooters would miss. In the second round Drexel scored, but Navy missed.

The Dragon’s iced the game when they scored in the third round. The two teams would play again in Philadelphia on Saturday night.
