ANNAPOLIS, MD: On Saturday, March 7, the #1 seeded Drexel Dragons defeated the 4th seeded William Paterson Pioneers in the first of two ECHA semifinal games at McMullen Arena, home to Navy Hockey, by a score of 6-1.
The first period sarted off with more penalties than goals, with a total of seven between the two teams. It wasn’t until just 14.5 seconds remained, that William Paterson’s Nicholas Brown got the Pioneer’s on the board, with a power play goal. Andy Deangelis and Braden Ploehn got the assists on the Brown goal.
Drexel’s Kyler Weller would score the first of his two second period goals at even strength with 13:17 remaining. Mike Churchvara would get the lone assist. Weller’s second goal would come on the power play with 5:35 remaining. Nick Urbani would get the primary assist, with Christopher Hagen getting the secondary assist. Twenty nine seconds later, while still on the power play, Patrick McGinley would extend the Dragon’s lead with an another assist from Hagen. The period would end with Drexel taking a 3-1 advantage.
Nick Urbani would get his second point of the night, when he scored and even strength goal two minutes and 50 seconds into the period. Nick Castura and Jarrett Ortiz would get the assists. At the six minute mark, Tyler Black would score an unassisted goal for the Dragons. The final goal of the game would be scored with 3:50 remaining when Christopher Hagen fed Cameron Neely, giving the ECHA regular season champions a 6-1 victory.
Jeremy Wik would make 23 saves on 24 shots in the winning effort for Drexel. Cole Mulholland would make 27 saves on 33 shots.
