PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Dorowicz, Atwal each net two as Cyclones get first win

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones (1-0-0-0) picked up a 5-2 win over the Ft. Wayne Komets on Saturday night. Forward Spencer Dorowicz and defenseman Arvin Atwal each had a pair of goals, while forward Justin Vaive netted a lone tally.

The Cyclones struck first in this one 6:07 into the opening period when Atwal got his own rebound off a shot from the right circle and sent a backhander through the legs of Komets netminder Zach Fucale to put Cincinnati ahead, 1-0.

After the Komets tied the game 26 seconds later on a marker from forward Anthony Petruzzelli, Cincinnati regained the lead with 2:39 to play in the frame when forward Jesse Schultz sent a pass to Vaive in the high slot and rifled in a shot off the crossbar and in to put the ‘Clones back up, 2-1.

The Komets were not deterred and evened up the game with 1:03 to go in the frame when Jamie Schaafsma lit the lamp to even the game, 2-2, after 20 minutes.

The Cyclones regained the lead near the midway point of the second when Dorowicz entered the zone and snapped a shot in from the left circle to give Cincinnati the lead back, 3-2.

That 3-2 lead held up throughout the remainder of the second and in the third Dorowicz struck again when a scramble in the slot resulted in him getting the puck, and he slid a shot between the legs of Fucale to put Cincinnati ahead, 4-2, 3:58 into the third.Cincinnati put it away late in the period while shorthanded, when Atwal sent a backhander from his defensive end and into the empty net to seal Cincinnati’s 5-2 victory.

The Cyclones outshot the Komets, 28-26, with goaltender Jonas Johansson steering aside 24 in the win. They Cyclones head to Indy to battle the Fuel next Friday night. Face-off is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
