CINCINNATI, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (19-21-4-0) earned a 4-3 overtime win over the Wheeling Nailers on Thursday, February 2nd. Forwards Jordan Sims, Nick Huard, Dylan Nowakowski, and Andrew Yogan scored the goals for the Cyclones, who snap their four-game losing skid.
The two sides headed to the locker room scoreless after the first, and 6:09 into the second the Nailers took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal from forward Garrett Meurs.
Cincinnati responded roughly five and a half minutes later when forward Joe Manno dug the puck out from the left corner and sent a pass to Sims in the circle, and he fired a wrister that trickled past Wheeling goaltender Sean Maguire to tie the game, 1-1.
The Cyclones took the lead at 14:41 of the second when forward Brandon McNally fed Huard from below the goal line, and he launched a shot from the left circle off the post and in on the power play, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The Nailers’ power play struck again :46 into the third when forward Cody Wydo found the back of the net to tie the game, with his 16th goal of the season.
Cincinnati continued to battle and regained the lead late in the frame when a loose puck ended up on the side of the net, and Nowakowski was there to jam it past Maguire to put the Cyclones back up 3-2 with his first goal as a Cyclone.
With 8.1 seconds remaining in regulation Wheeling’s power play converted for the third time in the game when Jarrett Burton trickled a shot in past Cyclones goaltender Michael Houser to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime.
In the extra session, special teams played the deciding factor as with 2:04 remaining, Yogan threw a shot on goal that was initially turned away by Maguire, but he grabbed his own rebound and stuffed the puck into the back of the net to lift Cincinnati to the 4-3 overtime win.
Cincinnati was outshot 43-22 on the night with Houser stopping 40 in the win. It was another successful night for Cincinnati’s power play, as they converted on 67 percent of their chances.
