COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Nick Schilkey’s second goal of the game lifted the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 6-5 win in overtime against No. 6-ranked Michigan
Sunday afternoon in Nationwide Arena. The victory completed a sweep for the Buckeyes, who won 7-4 over the Wolverines Friday in Ann Arbor. Ohio State is unbeaten in its last five games (3-0-1) and has won its last three.
The Buckeyes were ahead 3-0 after the first period and 5-1 late in the second before Michigan scored twice in the final 45 seconds of the period to make the score 5-3 heading into the third. The Wolverines tied the game with goals at 10:33 and 15:07 of the third period, sending the teams to overtime for the second time this season. Schilkey, a Marysville, Michigan, native, backhanded in a shot at 2:54 of overtime for the Buckeye win.
Schilkey had two goals and an assist for three points in the win, extending his point streak to six games, with six goals, eight assists and 14 points in the streak. He has an NCAA-best 2.33 points per game over the last three weeks and leads Ohio State with 19 goals and 39 points this season. Junior Drew Brevig had two assists in the win and has a 2-2-4 line in the last three games combined. Senior Craig Dalrymple had his first multiple point of the season with a goal and an assist for two points. Michigan natives Dakota Joshua and Brendon Kearney both scored in the game, with Joshua picking up an assist for a two-point day. Freshman Mason Jobst also tallied for Ohio State, one of 10 Buckeyes with a point in the win.
The Buckeyes will close the regular season with two games at Michigan State next weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich.
Ohio State led 3-0 after the first period, outshooting the Wolverines 10-5 through the first 20 minutes. Joshua opened the scoring, taking a pass from Brevig and scoring under the crossbar at 10:15. At 15:45 Kearney made it 2-0, corralling a flip pass from Dalrymple, dekeing the UM goalie and sliding the puck inside the post while falling. Freshman Tommy Parran had the second assist on the goal, extending his point streak to five. Schilkey put the Buckeyes up 3-0, converting a partial breakaway by beating the UM goalie glove side. Sophomore Matthew Weis and freshman Freddy Gerard assisted on the tally, which came at 17:06.
Zach Werenski put the Wolverines on the board with a power play goal at 5:59 of the second period. The Buckeyes answered at 10:14 when Jobst scored from the slot, assisted by Joshua and senior Anthony Greco. Less than three minutes (13:11) later Dalrymple’s shot from the point got through for a 5-1 Buckeye lead. Schilkey assisted on the tally, the senior defenseman’s fourth goal of the year.
Michigan then went on a four-goal run to tie the game. The Wolverines cut the Buckeye lead to two (5-3) with two goals in the final minute of the second period, from Cristoval Nieves at 19:15 and Tony Calderone at 19:39 on the power play. At 10:22 of the third Werenski netted his second power play goal of the game and Cooper Marody tied the game at five with a tally at 15:07. With 2:04 left Michigan appeared to take a 6-5 lead, but the call on the ice was no goal and video replay confirmed the call of a high stick
used to put the puck in the net. Ohio State had a power play with 1:47 left, and had chances to score, but could not convert, sending the teams to overtime for the second time this season. Shots were 10-7 in favor of Michigan in the period.
In overtime, matching penalties were called at 1:37. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Brevig led Schilkey on a breakaway. With the UM backcheckers closing in, Schilkey’s first shot was saved and the rebound went to the high slot. The Michigan goalie went to chase the puck, but Schilkey won the race; he was able to gather the puck and get in position to score on a backhand though the Wolverine players trying to block the shot. Ohio State had five shots in overtime, with Michigan putting two on net.
In the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Wolverines, 33-31. Junior Matt Tomkins played 62:54 and had 26 saves for the Buckeyes and Steve Racine made 27 stops for the Wolverines. Ohio State blocked 18 shot attempts, led by Brevig with five and junior defenseman Josh Healey with four.
Ohio State was 1-for-5 on the power play in the game, with Michigan 3-for-4.
