SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks fell to the Boston Bruins in overtime, despite a hat-trick by Joe Thornton (the fifth of his career). The Sharks had to climb out of a 0-3 deficit created by the Bruins early in the first period. Bruins goals came off the sticks of Torey Krug, Zdeno Chara and Karson Kuhlman. Thornton scored a goal in each of the three periods.
Thornton’s first goal came with only three seconds remaining in the first period. Joe Pavelski scored only 2:24 into the second period to close the gap to within a single goal, but Jake DeBrusk scored on a power play a few minutes later. Thornton struck again, followed by Logan Couture late in the period for the 4-4 equalizer unassisted.
Thornton’s third goal was at 13:32 to give the Sharks the lead for the first time. Chris Wagner found a way to even the score with less than two minutes remaining on the clock and ultimately earn the overtime opportunity.
Bruin’s Charlie McAvoy scored the game winner 3:59 into the overtime period, to give Boston their season-high sixth straight win, with a final score of 6-5.
