Following dissapointent in Wiltshire the Bees returned to home ice and renewed rivalrly with the Milton Keynes Lightning on their return to tier 2 hockey.

It would be the visitors who took the lead at 9.40 when Rio Grinnell-Parke was alone in front of the net and allowed to finish. The Lightning enjoyed a successful first period in which they minimised the Bees chances to hang on to their lead.

The Bees returned for the second looking far more dangerous and despite a significant amount of time spend shorthanded threatened to level the game on numerous occasions. Finally, with 1.18 left on the clock in the middle period the Bees levelled through Will Stead who was anchoring his position in front of the net and just as a Bees powerplay came to an end managed to finish from Roman Malinik to level up heading into the second interval.

Robin Kovar was making his home ice debut for the Bees having been kept out due to an injury sustained in pre-season and made his presence felt in the third period. He had to wait his turn after a turbulent start to the period which saw Lightning sneak back ahead thanks to a Ben Russell goal at 40.26. Bees then had to weather a period spent shorthanded before Kovar scored a powerplay goal at 49.35 to level at 2-2. His second came within 3 minutes, this one at even strength giving the Bees the lead for the first time. A match penalty was called on Brendan Baird at 53.15 giving Milton Keynes a full five minute powerplay. Grinnell-Parke’s second of the night came within the first minute of the powerplay at 53.56 but they failed to convert any further and the game headed into overtime.

Three on Three overtime couldn’t separate the teams despite a penalty call against the Bees giving the Lightning a significant powerplat chance at it was down to penalty shots. Ari Narhi shot first to be denied by Goss and Aidan Doughty took the first shot for the Bees to be denied by Lawday. The Lightning second shot was also saved but Kovar’s third goal of the night broke the penalty shootout deadlock. Adam Goss went on to win the game for the Bees forcing Lightning’s third shooter wide of the net.
