COLUMBUS, GA – A stellar performance between the pipes by Garrett Bartus helped Macon defeat the Columbus Cottonmouths, 4-1.
Columbus was stymied by Macon netminder Bartus, who stopped 29 shots during the victory. Bartus certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.39 entering the contest.
Macon Mayhem excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. The Mayhem relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Shawn Skelly, Jackson Brewer and Jake Trask took 17 of the team’s 33 shots.
Macon also got a goal from Lucas LaBelle as well. In addition, Macon received assists from Jeff Sanders, who had one and Daniel Gentzler, who had three.
The Cottonmouths’ penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Mayhem power plays. Columbus’ offense was clicking better than usual and put 30 shots on goal during the game, better than the 21.0 shots per game it averages. The Cottonmouths’ defensemen also contributed in the offensive zone and ended up with 16 shots between them.
Columbus was led by Alex Pompeo, who scored the team’s only goal. Pompeo scored 12:31 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Macon. Andy Bathgate provided the assist.
Macon incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Brandon Jaeger rejected 29 shots on goal for the Cottonmouths. Columbus incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
