COLUMBUS, Ga – A big first period by the Auburn Tigers helped build a 4-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes of play on Saturday night.
The Tigers were hosting Georgia Tech on home ice in the season opener.
Brandon Weiss collected two goals in the opening frame to pace the Tigers.
Jack Driggs and Loic Harouseau also scored in the first.
Michael Markwordt got Tech on the board in the middle frame.
Steven Verrone made it 5-1 early in the third period and that proved to be the game-winner as Georgia Tech roared back with three goals to cut the deficit to 5-4.
The Jackets’ third period goals came from Michael Brzozowski, Markwordt (his second), and Kevin Polak.
Chandler Brown ended the suspense with a late empty-net goal for the Tigers and the 6-4 final.
