ALLEN, Texas – The Allen Americans opened the season on Friday night at home against the Quad City Mallards, dropping a 2-1 decision on banner raising night.
Quad City opened the scoring in the first frame firing one home on the power play when Guillaume Gelinas, netted his first of the season from Collin Valcourt and Miles Koules at the 9:24 mark despite being outshot 11-9 in the first.
Quad City added to their lead in the second period when Logan Nelson, scored with a wrister from in front of the Americans net to give the Mallards a 2-0 lead. Allen held a slight advantage in shots on goal 23-21 after two periods.
The Americans would finally breakthrough in the third period when Garrett Clarke scored on a blast from the right wing boards just inside the Quad City blue-line to cut the lead to 2-1. The Americans had chances late in the final period with a power play and the extra attacker on the ice but Mallards goalie Steve Michalek, withheld the Americans pressure and picked up a 2-1 victory spoiling banner raising night in Allen.
Dyson Stevenson and Ryan Tesink went toe to toe in the first period with Stevenson getting the best of the Mallards forward which had the big crowd on their feet.
Americans starting goalie missed the game tonight due to illness, so Joel Rumpel, got the call for Steve Martinson’s club. Dayn Belfour, son of former Dallas Stars goalie Eddie Belfour, backed up Rumpel as he was signed today as the emergency backup.
