PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Americans beat Mallards for first win of 2016

phn-bsogMOLINE, Ill. – The Allen Americans wrapped up their four game road trip Saturday night against the Quad City Mallards, winning by a score of 4-1.

It took until the final two minutes of the first period to break the scoreless tie, but a big slap shot from Eric Roy found the top corner of the net to give the Americans the 1-0 lead. Quad City’s Steve Michalek and Allen’s Riley Gill starred in their respective nets. While neither team surpassed 8 total shots in the period, the offensive chances were quality over quantity. However, both goalies stood tall in a fast paced opening frame.

The Mallards were able to draw even when Sam Warning broke through the defense for a breakaway and put the puck past Gill. However, late in the second period, the Americans got their first Power Play opportunity on the night. Again in the final two minutes, Allen cashed in on the rare man advantage on a shot from the point by David Makowski. Allen took the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

In the third period, Allen added on some insurance with a goal from Dyson Stevenson. In net, Gill continued to stand on his head for the Americans as J.P. LaFontaine finished off the Mallards with an empty net goal.

After the victory against the Mallards, the Americans officially walked away from a four game road trip with three wins. After doing the math, the Americans will return home picking up six of a possible eight points in the standings. The Americans are still second in the division behind the red hot Missouri Mavericks.

The Allen Americans return home on Friday, January 8th, welcoming the Colorado Eagles to town.
