SAN JOSE, Calif. – In an exciting back and forth action packed game, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Calgary Flames in a shootout, with a final 3-2 score.
Forward Garnet Hathaway scored the first goal of the match when he caught a rebound from a shot off Sam Bennett infront of goalie Martin Jones for the goal at 4:22 in the first period. Mark Jankowski was credited on the assist with Bennett. Three minutes later, Joe Pavelski netted his eighth goal of the year, on a power play from the slot. Joe Thornton got the assist on the shot. The final goal of the period came at 15:45, on a Calgary power play, after Johnny Gaudrau stick hanlded the puck to the offensive zone, and slipped it to Matthew Tkachuk in the center, who handed it off to Mikael Backlund for the goal from the right circle, beating David Rittich in the Flames net.
The Flames lead until the twelve minute mark of the third period, when Sharks Timo Meier found a way to beat Rittich for the tying goal, to force the overtime period.
The teams were knotted at the end 2-2 forcing the shootout. Joe Pavelski scored the first shot against Rittich, followed by a Jones save against Sean Monahan. Brent Burns shot was turned away by Rittich, as was Backlund’s shot by Jones. It would be Joonas Donskoi with the shootout winner.
Rittich made 30 saves in his fourth NHL start in the net for the season, since being called up from the Stockton Heat in mid-November. Jones posted 32 saves for the win in the 3-2 game in a shootout.
