WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita exploded for five goals in the third period including two from Thomas Beauregard as the Thunder (21-8-2) blew past the Tulsa Oilers (16-12-3) with a 6-2 win Saturday night in front of 6,410 fans at INTRUST Bank Arena.
Wichita is now 5-4-0 against Tulsa this season and leads the Central Hockey League’s Berry Conference with 44 points.
The Oilers struck first at the 3:09 mark of the first period as former Thunder forward Troy Ofukany came down on the rush and snuck one past Wichita goalie Ryan MacDonald to make it 1-0. Ofukany played in 93 games for Wichita, scoring 63 points before being traded to Odessa in 2009-10.
Aaron Davis got Wichita on the board in the second period at 14:41 to tie the game at one. Matt Robinson carried it into the zone, held onto the puck until Davis came free and found the back of the net.
In the third period, the flood gates opened as a tight game turned into a runaway.
Daniel Tetrault made it 2-1 with a one-time blast past Tulsa goalie Mike Garman at 3:24.
Tulsa’s Jason Weeks tied the game at two at 5:02, but Wichita answered 27 seconds later when Thomas Beauregard (16) snuck in past the Tulsa defense, caught a long-lead pass from R.G. Flath and scored on a break-away to make it 3-2. He scored his second of the game at 12:14 when he blasted a one-timer past Garman to make it 4-2.
Wichita scored the final four of the game as Matt Robinson and Justin Sawyer each added one to give Wichita a 6-2 win.
Several players kept scoring streaks alive as Beauregard and Matt Summers extended their point scoring streaks to six games each.
The Thunder continue to lead the league in points and the best record on home ice at 15-3-0.
Wichita also scored five goals in one period back on October 28th at the BOK Center against Tulsa as Wichita won that game as well, 6-2.
