PHN photo essay: Pens blank Whale, 3-0

WILKES-BARRE TWP. – Scott Munroe stopped 27 shots to record his fifth shutout of the season as the Penguins defeated the Connecticut Whale 3-0 Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Munroe faced 82 shots against Connecticut three times this year and didn’t allow a single goal
The Penguins got off to a strong start to the first period, outshooting the Whale 10-3 and taking a 1-0 lead on rookie Simon Despres’ goal with 7:44 left in the first period by Cal O’Reilly holding the puck in the right-wing corner and spotted Despres who then fired the puck into the net. The Whale outshot the Penguins 8-0 the rest of the period, but Munroe held his ground.
The Penguins quickly took control in the second period when Bryan Lerg stole the puck near his own blue line skated in on Whale goalie Chad Johnson and used a backhand move to beat Johnson on the breakaway to make it 2-0 at the 49-second mark.
Geoff Walker made it 3-0 on a power play as he planted himself at the left post and slam-dunked a cross-ice pass from Jason Williams  at 5:18. Monroe contunied to shut the door on the Whale until the final buzzer.
