PHN Photo Essay – Arizona Sundogs @ Tulsa Oilers 11/22/11

TULSA, Okla. – It was a battle royale at the BOK Center on Tuesday evening as the visiting Arizona Sundogs took an early lead and then held their ground against a Tulsa Oilers comeback to win 7-6 after a nine-round shootout. Rookie defenseman Shawn Morton-Boutin’s game-winning goal was also his first as a professional and Sean Erickson scored twice to extend his current point streak to seven games. Scott Reid stopped 36 of 42 shots faced to earn a third win in his last four starts. His record improves to 3-3-0. The Oilers’ Mike Ullrich led all skaters with a four-point night, all in the second period, including a hat trick.  The Sundogs got on the scoreboard at the 2:41 mark of the first period when Kyle Hood beat Ian Keserich to make it a 1-0 contest. David Nimmo added a tally at the 9:16 mark off a pass from Jeff Hazelwood to make it 2-0, which held until the first intermission. Arizona had a 17-8 shot advantage after 20 minutes. Keserich’s night continued to sour when Luke Erickson scored 1:21 into the middle frame. Tulsa rookie Mike Ullrich tallied his first of the evening on a power play strike fed by Ryan Cramer at the 9:21 mark. The Sundogs answered just 26 seconds later when Erickson got his secon of the night, assisted by newcomer Samson Mahbod. A Roughing Double Minor on Jason Goulet, who had a tiff with Michel Beausoleil (also called for Roughing) led to a power play score by Tulsa’s Dylan Clark. Cramer and Ullrich were credited with the assists. A Hooking call on Gio Flamminio led to a power play goal by Jean-Philipp Chabot with a little help from Kyle Hood, six seconds into the man-advantage. Keserich was replaced by Mike Garman after Chabot’s score. Then it was all Ullrich, who closed out the middle frame and got his hat trick with two scores against Garman at the 17:47 and 18:18 marks. Flamminio was in on both tallies. Tulsa out shot Arizona 19-8 in the second period, but was down 5-4 after 40 minutes. Samson Mahbod scored his first goal as a Sundog at the 6:47 mark of the third period, assisted by Hood, to give the visitors a two-point buffer but Troy Ofukany did the same just 50 seconds later with the feed from Tyler Fleck. Both Mahbod and Ofukany had just signed contracts with their new teams on Tuesday afternoon. Ryan Cramer scored the equalizer on the power play later in the period, securing the 6-6 final in regulation and an overtime bid for the Oilers. With no scoring in the extra frame, the game went to a shoot out and after nine rounds, only Jay Sprague was able to beat Scott Reid and Arizona took the win with strikes by Adam Smyth and Boutin, who gave the Sundogs just their second win on the road this season.
