ALLEN, Texas – The Allen Americans earned their first shutout of the season on Tuesday night, defeating the Arizona Sundogs 2-0 at the Allen Event Center.
The Americans jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead on their first short-handed goal of the season. Jeff Martins scored his 4th goal of the season, unassisted when he stole the puck at center ice and broke in ahead of the defense, beating Arizona netminder Scott Reid with a wrist shot. The Americans out shot Arizona 7-6 in the first frame and went into the locker room with the 1-0 lead. There was no scoring in the second period, however both goalies were tested. Arizona’s Scott Reid stopped Bruce Graham twice at point blank range and held fast against 15 total shots, while Allen’s Rejean Beauchemin stopped eight shots in the frame.
The Americans added to their lead in the third period when Mark Nebus blasted one into the net from the right wing boards. It was Nebus’ second goal as a member of the Americans, and his second in as many games. Rejean Beauchemin was spectacular in net stopping all 24 Arizona shots and allowing just one goal in his previous 120 minutes of work. Allen led in shots for the third consecutive period, 13-10 and had the 35-24 shot advantage during the game. With the win , the Americans temporarily jumped past Wichita into first place in the Berry Conference, one point ahead of the Thunder, setting up a first place showdown on Friday night.
