PHN Photo Essay – Allen Americans @ Missouri Mavericks 12/10/11

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Former teammates battled one another and played pivotal roles for their new clubs Saturday night when the Allen Americans wrapped up their four games in five night’s stint facing the Missouri Mavericks at the Independence Event Center. Recently traded from the Allen Americans to Missouri, goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson started in net for the Mavericks up against Marco Cousineau for Allen. Both goaltenders turned in stellar performances in the intense game that was tight until the dramatic final minutes of play.
Missouri jumped on the scoreboard early when Ed McGrane found the back of the net just 41 seconds into the contest off passes by Sebastian Thinel and Andrew Courtney, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Allen got on the board late in the period to even the score 1-1 on Colton Yellow Horn’s first goal of night, assisted by Jarret Lukin at the 16:48 mark. The period ended with the score unchanged and the Mavericks leading in shots 12-7.
Just past the midway point of the second period, the Mavericks took back the lead on a goal by Ryan Jardine at 11:34, assisted by Andrew Courtney and Steve Kaunisto (also recently traded to Missouri from Allen). Allen had a 17-15 shot advantage but Missouri maintained the slight edge overall, 27-24. Colton Yellow Horn tied the game for the Americans 2:10 into the third period with his second goal of the night, assisted by Jim McKenzie and Bruce Graham. The Mavericks answered with a goal from John-Scott Dickson, taking back the lead at the 12:19 mark with assists credited to Steve Kaunisto and Dale Mahovsky.
Lachlan MacIntosh, acquired by Allen in the recent trade, netted the tying goal unassisted for the Americans with 2:34 remaining in regulation. MacIntosh’s goal sparked a huge momentum shift in the Americans favor and with 1:13 remaining in regulation, Mike Berube scored for Allen to put them on top 4-3, assisted by Jason Deitsch and Bruce Graham. Colton Yellow Horn then cemented the victory for the Americans with his third goal of the night to earn the hat trick, with just three ticks left on the game clock. Allen outshot Missouri 12-7 in the period and 36-34 in the game.
With the win, Allen improved to 13-4-4 for 30 points, remaining in first place in the Berry Conference and the Central Hockey League standings.
