Independence, Mo. – The Allen Americans won their ninth game of the season on the road against the Missouri Mavericks Friday evening, 4-1.
CHL Goaltender of the Week Marco Cousineau stopped 38 of 39 shots faced and a determined Americans penalty kill unit blanked the Mavericks power play 0-6.
With the win, Allen improved to 9-2-3 on the season and moved back into first place in the Berry Conference.
“The guys played really well in front of me,” Cousineau said. “I felt really good out there. When the team plays that way for 60 minutes we are going to win.”
Allen opened the scoring early on a power play goal by Brian McMillin at 1:55 of the first period, assisted by Jim McKenzie and Nick Layton. The score remained unchanged until defenseman Tyler Ludwig extended the Americans lead to 2-0 on his second goal of the year at the 12:08 mark of the second period. Spencer Edwards notched his first point in his first game with the Americans and Brian McMillin got his second point of the night with their assists on the goal. Cole Ruwe put Missouri on the board at 6:05 of the third period, cutting the Americans lead in half. Play was back and forth until late in regulation when the Americans were able to put the game out of reach with a pair of goals. Keith Johnson scored his 100th career goal at 18:37 to extend the Americans lead to 3-1, with Bruce Graham contributing an assist. Brian McMillin then notched his second goal of the evening and third point of the game, with an empty net goal at 19:27. Assisting on the goal, for his second point of the evening was Nick Layton.
