PHILADELPHIA, Pa – The Philadelphia Flyers are currently ranked 4th in the NHL in scoring, but most of their scoring come from the center and right wing positions. The highest scoring left winger on the current roster is Michael Raffl, who has 7 goals and 2 assists in 29 games. The next best scoring left winger is Roman Lyubimov with 3 goals and 1 assist in 28 games. That is not going to cut it for a team that is in danger of falling out of a playoff spot.
While the Flyers have focused on the blueline in recent years in the NHL Entry Draft, they are still looking for a blue chip prospect on offense to fill in that scoring need. The problem is they have had more than several chances to address their needs at winger but the always stubborn Flyers keep racking up the centers in their down-the-middle-of-the-ice mentality.
The good news is the Flyers can either take some of their center prospects and move them to wing, or pray one of their current prospects turn out to be a hidden gem.
Today we move on to part 3 of our look at the Flyers top prospects with the wingers, both right and left.
Oskar Lindblom LW – The one knock on Lindblom when he was drafted in the 5th round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft was his skating. No one is knocking him for his skating these days. Lindblom has been playing again men ever he has been playing in the Swedish Hockey League and has 9 goals in 30 games.
He played in eight games last season for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL last season and had 2 goals and 5 assists. When his season is over this season in Sweden it’s a good bet it might be the last time he ever plays overseas.
At worst Lindblom will start next season in the AHL but don’t expect him to stay there long. Look for him to make the Flyers roster next season, but if he doesn’t he will make it the following.
Nicolas Aube-Kubel RW – Taken in the second round in the same draft as Lindblom, Aube-Kubel was a true goal scorer in the Quebec Major Juniors scoring 38 goals in back-to-back seasons. So far he is having trouble getting his scoring touch back. He had 2 goals in 6 games last season for the Phantoms last season but has only four goals this season in 30 games.
Look for Aube-Kubel to be back in the AHL next season before anyone panics about his lack of scoring. Hopefully patience will pay off for him.
Carsen Twarynski LW – Has been a pleasant surprise. A third round pick in 2016, Twarynski had 20 goals in 67 games for the Calgary Hitmen last season and has 9 in 34 so far this season, good for 4th on the team. He has good size and is solidly built.
Expect Twarynski to stay in Calgary for one more season before hitting the AHL.
Wade Allison RW – Allison was the third second pick for the Flyers last season and was the Flyers pick before Twarynski was taken. He scored 25 goals last season for Tri-City in the USHL and is currently playing college hockey for the 14th ranked Western Michigan Broncos where he has 9 goals in 18 games.
Allison is built like Twarynski and when both players turn pro they will get a long look. Expect Allison to be in college for at least one more season, but unless he has a standout season will most likely stay at WM through his senior season.
Radel Fazleev LW – Taken in the sixth round in the same draft as Aube-Kubel and Lindblom, Fazleev was a teammate of Twarynski last season as well as Flyers defensive prospect Travis Sanheim. Fazleev led the Calgary Hitmen last season in points with 19 goals and 52 assists. Not bad for such a late round find.
Like Aube-Kubel he has struggled in the AHL with only 3 goals and 7 assists in 30 games. Fazleev. Needless to say he will be with the Phantoms next season and should turn things around before getting a long look by the Flyers brass the following season.
