Petes Sweep Eastern Conference Quarter-Final with 4-2 Win Over Wolves

On Wednesday, April 5, the Petes took on the Sudbury Wolves in Sudbury for game four of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Final matchup. The Petes were looking to sweep the series after going up 3-0 with a 5-3 win over the Wolves in Sudbury last night.

The Petes came out flying to start the game, looking to bring a series win back with them on the bus to Peterborough. The Wolves would fall into some penalty trouble early, resulting in a Petes five on three just under five minutes into the game. They would waste no time getting on the board as Tucker Robertson fed Owen Beck in front who made it 1-0 Peterborough. The goal marked the first time in the series that the Petes scored first, with the Wolves capitalizing first in the previous three games. Unfortunately for the Petes, on the same powerplay, some miscommunication led to a Wolves short handed breakaway, which they scored on to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the only offence in a relatively low shooting period. Going into the second, the game was tied at one a piece, with Sudbury leading 8-7 in shots.

For the second straight period, the Petes would strike first on the powerplay. This time it was Tommy Purdeller who buried his first OHL playoff goal to reinstate the Petes one goal lead. Once again, the lead was short lived as Sudbury capitalized on their own powerplay after the Petes goal to tie it up at 2-2. Peterborough would really put on the pressure after that, and with eight minutes left in the second, it paid off. With 7:57 remaining in the period, J.R. Avon forced a turnover and beat Kevyn Brassard on the partial breakaway to make it 3-2. Two minutes after that, Tucker Robertson scored to increase the Petes lead to 4-2. Peterborough would take their two goal lead into the third, looking to hold on for the series sweep.

It would be a physical third period, but the Petes would keep the Wolves off the board and secure the series sweep with a 4-2 win. It was the first time that the Petes swept a series since Kingston in 2017.

J.R. Avon (1G, 1A), Tucker Robertson (1G, 1A), and Brennan Othmann (2A) led the way for the Petes. Owen Beck and Tommy Purdeller scored, while Connor Lockhart and Cam Gauvreau added an assist. Michael Simpson stopped 27/29 for his fourth straight win.
