Petes Fall 4-3 in Shootout to Colts

The Petes started off a three in three on Thursday night as they hosted the Barrie Colts for First Responders Night at the PMC. It would be the second meeting between the two teams after the Petes blanked the Colts 5-0 in Barrie on October 8th. Michael Simpson would get the nod in net for the Petes fresh off of being named OHL Goaltender of the Month earlier in the week.

Barrie came out strong, looking to avenge the 5-0 loss to Peterborough earlier in the season. It wouldn’t take long for them to capitalize as only 3:07 into the game Beau Akey snuck a point shot past a screened Michael Simpson to put the Colts up 1-0. Barrie didn’t stop there as only three minutes later, Tai York would poke one by Simpson on the powerplay to extend the Colts lead to 2-0. The Petes would start to find their groove after that, slowly taking over possession. It would pay off at the 15:13 mark of the period, as Connor Lockhart (who was playing as a defenceman) ripped a shot from the point past Barrie goalie Ben West to cut the Colt’s lead to 2-1 going into the first intermission.

The second period was a battle both ways, with both goalies shutting the door early to keep the score at 2-1. That would only be the case until the 5:49 mark, when Connor Lockhart made a great defensive play to send Tucker Robertson and Nick Lardis on a two on one. Robertson would feed Lardis for the one-timer to give him his seventh goal of the season. That would be the only goal of the period and the game would stay tied at 2-2 going into the third.

The third period started strong for the Petes with multiple chances to take the lead, but Barrie would hold off the early barrage. The tides turned five minutes into the period, as Chris Grisolia tucked a wrap-around by Michael Simpson to give Barrie the 3-2 lead. The Petes would battle back late, as Connor Lockhart would score his second of the game and sixth of the season on the powerplay to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to OT.

Overtime solved nothing and the game would head to a shootout.
