It was Halloween at the PMC on Thursday, October 27th as the Soo Greyhounds made the trek to Peterborough to take on the Petes. The Petes would be looking to sweep the Greyhounds in the season series, after beating them in the Soo 3-2 in overtime two weeks ago. The game would be a homecoming for Peterborough natives and Minor Petes products, Kalvyn Watson and Tyler Savard, who both would play in their first games in Peterborough as members of the Greyhounds.
The first period started off with a bang when 2023 NHL draft prospect Konnor Smith blasted a shot past Soo goalie Charlie Schenkel for his first goal of the season. The pucked looked to hit Petes forward Sahil Panwar before going in, but after review the goal was ultimately awarded to Smith. J.R Avon hit a career milestone on the goal, picking up his 50th career assist. The Petes would grab another just a minute and a half later when Tucker Robertson scored a beautiful goal on the powerplay to make it 2-0 Petes early. The boys wouldn’t stop there, as 2023 NHL draft prospect Nick Lardis would score his fifth of the season just four minutes later to extend the lead to 3-0. The Soo would answer a minute later, as Kalvyn Watson would score on his return to his hometown to make it 3-1. It would stay that way heading into the first break.
The second period would continue to lean heavily in Peterborough’s favour, with the Petes piling on the shots. The Soo would hold off the barrage until the 14:06 mark, when Brian Zanetti picked up a loose puck and ripped it home to make it 4-1 Petes. That would be the only goal in the period and it would stay 4-1 heading into the third.
The final frame saw the Petes come out early once again, with Chase Stillman batting in his second goal of the season to make it 5-1. The Soo would answer right away, as Justin Cloutier ripped a shot past Michael Simpson to make it 5-2. In a final attempt to cut the lead down, the Greyhounds would pull their goalie, but Connor Lockhart would take advantage and put the game way out of reach with his 3rd of the season to make it a 6-2 final.
Nick Lardis led the way for the Petes with one goal and two assists on the night. Chase Stillman and Connor Lockhart both had a goal and an assist. J.R. Avon extended his point streak to seven games and picked up his 50th and 51st career assists in the win. Michael Simpson stopped 22 shots for his sixth win of the season.
