In Anaheim Wednesday night, the Ducks’ Corey Perry notched his third hat trick of the season and goalie Frederik Andersen made 28 saves in Anaheim’s 5-0 win over the hapless Toronto Maple Leafs.
“Since I’ve been back it’s been tough, but I’m trying to get back in the swing of things,” Perry said. “Everything’s starting to feel 100 percent.”
This was second straight shutout the Leafs have offered.
“You don’t expect us to get shut out two games in a row,” forward Daniel Winnik said. “Tonight, a lot of our problems were in the neutral zone,” Winnik said. “We didn’t have a lot of clean entries into the zone and rarely got the puck deep on them.”
Jonathan Bernier made 21 saves in the loss.
“There’s not a lot of puck luck, that’s for sure,” Maple Leafs interim coach Peter Horachek said. “They scored a 5-on-3, an empty-net goal, one went off our skate and one was a breakaway.”
At some point, teams need to make their own luck and the Maple Leafs is doing precious little to change their fortunes.
“It’s always fun when you shut a team out, so that’s cool, and very fun for Perrs too to get a hat trick,” Andersen said. “That’s a fun game to play. We want to be able to put teams away, and we did that today.”
Toronto continues to have many questions and few answers for their play as they fall out of contention in the eastern conference playoff race.
