Peoria takes four-point weekend

Peoria, IL –  It wasn’t a work of art but a win is a win and the RIvermen pocket four points on the weekend in a series with the Macon Mayhem. After a shootout Friday. no extra time was needed Saturday as Peoria prevailed 5-4 in front of 3,809 fans at Carver Arena.

The big story? Two power play goal by Peoria. Before this game, Peoria’s power play unit had been successful only 9% of the time.

The Rivermen had eight power play opportunities.

Macon had seven chances but was unable to score.

Peoria took an early 2-0 lead with goals from Jeff Jones and Connor Gorman. Matt Johnson put one across for Macon to make it 2-1 at the end of one.

Macon tied the game twice in the second period.

Initially, Stephen Pierog’s unassisted goal tieditat two. Dave Pszenyczny gave Peoria a brief lead before Stathis Soumedilis evened it back up at three-all. Alex Hagaman and Cody Dion scored within 38 second of each other to take the lead and increase it to two as the period ended with a 5-3 Rivermen lead.

Only Joel Wetmore would tally in the final period, drawing the Mayhem to within one. Macon was then stymied with an extra attacked in the final 1:11 and the score ended 4-4.

Curtis Martinu earned his first minutes between the pipes in the SPHL this season but was replaced by Troy Passingham for the final twenty minutes. Martinu stopped 15 of 20 shots. Passingham stopped all sx shots he faced before being pulled for the exyra attacker. Tyler Parks stopped 26 of thirty shots for the win.

Rivermen Notes:  Sunday’s matinee with Evansville was postponed as the threat of icy weather might have significantly affected Evansville’s travels….Longtime Rivermen Dan Hodge was welcomed into the Rivermen Hall of Fame. The defenseman played six season for the Rivermen when they were in the ECHL….All nine goals in the game were scored by different players….Rivermen player Alex Hagaman earned first star honnors with a four point night.
