It was hockey scrimmage night in Pittsburgh on Sunday night.
More like men versus boys, pros versus Single A.
Whatever the description, it was another poor display of hockey and preparedness from the New York Rangers.
Mika Zibanejad scored his third pf the season early in the first period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Basically that was the end of the Rangers night.
The Penguins replied with three goals to take a 3-1 lead out of the opening frame.
“That’s obviously the start you would like to get, an early goal like that,” Zibanejad. “Didn’t really matter in this game. We’ll just move on.”
All three goals came in a span of 61 seconds.
John Marino, Kasperi Kapanen and Sidney Crosby were the strikers in the outburst.
“I think a lot of the credit goes out to the guys I play with,” Kapanen said. “They’re giving me a chance to make plays and score goals. Obviously, it was a nice little sit-down with Mike to talk about certain areas I need to be better, and to help the team.”
Casey DeSmith made 23 saves to get the win.
“A big problem for us tonight was our defensemen on these flips, we were just way too puck-conscious in the neutral zone, not really alert,” New York head coach David Quinn said. “Gave up three or four breakaways tonight because we’re playing the puck and not keeping our body between the net and the offensive player. Just basic things. Our mentality has to change in that scenario.”
Maybe the problem coach is, your team is not prepared well enough.
Evgeny Malkin and Zach Aston-Reese finished up the scrimmage with goal.
Alexandar Georgiev got the start for the Rangers and was given the hook after Crosby’s goal ended the outburst. He made three saves on six shots.
Another goalie who should file a civil suit for nonsupport from the coaching staff.
Keith Kinkaid made 16 saves in the game and really was there as a new target for Penguins skaters.
