Pens use big second period to take 2-1 series lead over Flyers

PHILADELPHIA – The Pittsburgh Penguins came back in Game 3 of their series with the Flyers Sunday and hung a 5-1 decision on the home side to take a 2-1 series lead.

Matt Murray made 26 saves to get the win as the Pens broke the game open in the middle frame.

The air was taken out of the arena when the Pens struck twice in five seconds to tie an NHL record for fastest goals.

Evgeni Malkin and Brian Dumoulin pulled off the feat in the second period to give the Pens a 4-0 lead.

Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists in the win.

“[Jake Guentzel] poked it forward and then I saw [Dumoulin] coming in late on the rush,” Crosby said. “Tried to find him there. I don’t know where he shot it, but he made a great read jumping up on the play and giving us numbers there.”

Derick Brassard also scored for Pittsburgh.

“It was just a matter of time for our power play to connect,” Brassard said. “There’s no panic on our side. We knew it was going to connect soon.”

Travis Sanheim scored the lone goal for the Flyers.

“We took six minor penalties in a 30-minute span in the middle of this hockey game,” Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol said. “You’re not going to win hockey games (that way).”

Brian Elliott made 21 saves in the loss.

“It’s not time to panic here. We have Wednesday here, guys are going to be ready. We’ll put this one behind us and we’ll do exactly what we did after Game 1, we’ll look at what we did wrong and fix it,” the Flyers’ Claude Giroux said after the loss.
