PITTSBURGH, Pa – The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins have been battling it out for 50 years ever since both teams came into the NHL back in 1967. However, tonight’s game was just a tad different than all the rest. This time they played on a frozen sheet of ice inside Heinz Field, a place normally known for NFL football and the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Penguins have one four Stanley Cups and entered tonight’s contest as the reigning champs. The Flyers haven’t tasted champagne our or Lord Stanley’s cup since 1976. With tonight’s 4-2 Penguins win, it was a microcosm of the two franchises.
The Penguins were strong from the start of the game and showed why they are a force to be reckoned with, while the Flyers showed some solid play early on in the game in the end it was another poor outing overall and the end result showed just how far the Flyers need to go before being taken seriously. Poor goaltending and untimely penalties were a recurring these for the Flyers all season long and tonight’s game was every loss rolled up into one for the orange and black.
The Pens got goals from four different sources including the first goal of the game by Sidney Crosby. The Flyers got goals from Jakub Vorecek and Shayne Gostisbehere. Penguins goaltender Matt Murray was easily the game’s first while Flyers goaltender Michael Neuvirth was far from it.
Two teams heading in different directions and in large part because one team’s best play showed on one on the NHL’s biggest stage while Claude Girioux was nowhere to be found. One team had great goaltending and the other team will once again be looking for a goalie in free agency.
After the game Flyers Head Coach Dave Hakstol tried to put things into perspective.
“We’ve got to stick with it. We’ve gone through a tough stretch here, and through that stretch we’ve played for the vast majority, we’ve played some pretty good hockey. We’ve got to stick with it…we realize the critical point of our year that were at.
