WILKES-BARRE , PA – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have done exactly what they needed to do, win their home games after they lost both games in Hershey to start the series.
After Saturday’s 4-1 victory in Game 5 of the East Division series, the Pens now hold a 3-2 lead. They hold the momentum as they head back down Route 81 South to try to wrap up the second round of playoffs. The Bears of course plan to use their house to their favor and win Games 6 and 7, although the ‘Pens took four of five regular season games at Giant Center including the last game of the regular season. The penguins capitalized on the Bears misfortunes by popping in three power play goals. Chris Minard and Luca Caputi hit the mark in the first period, while Nick Johnson used the man advantage in the second. Ashorthanded empty net goal by Jeff Taffe at the end of the third rounded out the scoring. The Bears lone tally came off the stick of Darren Reid in the second period. Adam Berkhoel has proven to be every bit the veteran as a replacement for John Curry who carried the ‘Pens into the post season and through the first round against Bridgeport. Berkhoel took over for Curry after the Bears scored three first period goals in Game 2. Berkhoel shutout the Bears for the remainder of that game and has stopped 85 of the 91 shots fired in on net over the past three gamesContact bob.sullivan@prohockeynews.com
