Pens rout Flyers, 7-1

Because Tuesday night’s game was a rip roaring success for the boys from Philly.

On Tuesday night, in Pittsburgh, seven different skaters struck for the Pens in a 7-1 rout of the Flyers.

“I like the way our team’s playing. I’ve liked the way our team’s been playing for three or four weeks now,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “I think we’ve got four lines participating. I think we’re playing the game the right way, the way we want to play it. When we all buy in the way the guys are buying in right now, I think we’re a very good hockey team.”

He should.

Sidney Crosby potted one goal and added two assists on the night.

Matt Murray made 29 saves in the win.

Oskar Lindblom scored in the third period for the Flyers.

“There’s no doubt we’re a much better team than we showed tonight,” coach Alain Vigneault said. “We, obviously, didn’t respond well. A couple of turnovers early, against such a good opponent, end up in the back of our net. … At the end of the day, we’ve got to push the reset button here. Our leaders have to lead by their play on the ice.”

The Pens scored four in the opening frame and never needed to look back.

Justin Schultz and Jared McCann put the Pens up 2-0 early in all the offense the offense they would need.

Dominik Simon and Crosby made it 4-0.

“You know that there’s always a little bit more in those games [against Philadelphia],” Crosby said. “You just try to prepare knowing that. With all the games and the [Stanley Cup Playoff] series in the past, the guys who have been around for a lot of those games, I’m sure everybody on both teams feels that way.”

Jake Guentzel, Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Kahun also scored for the Pens.

“We were just talking before the game about how big this one is, especially against the Flyers. It’s a big rivalry here. I think our start was so important. We said we need to have a good start, and we’re leading 4-0,” Kahun said.
