In Las Vegas, the Golden Knights to a 3-0 lead in the first period on Monday and then sat back and watched the Pittsburgh Penguins score five straight for a 5-3 win.
“You don’t want to lose at home,” Vegas’ Mark Stone said. “We pride ourselves on being a good home team. It’s been a tough stretch for us against good teams, but you’ve got to find a way to get points.”
Evgenii Dadonov, Chandler Stephenson, and Nicolas Roy scored in the opening frame for the 3-0 lead.
“Leading 3-0 after the first period, you can’t walk away from the game with nothing,” Stone said. “We’ve got a little soul-searching to do.”
Tristan Jarry made 23 saves in the Pens win.
Jason Zucker and Teddy Blueger scored for the Pens to cut the deficit to one, 2-3.
“Down 3-0 at the end of a long road trip, it would have been easy to start feeling sorry for ourselves and pack it in,” the Penguins’ Mike Matheson said. “We did the complete opposite.”
Zucker’s second goal of the game tied the game, 3-3, and Jake Guentzel scored for a 4-3 lead.
Sidney Crosby added an empty-net goal to ice the win.
Robin Lehner made 32 saves in the Vegas loss.
“Every team in the league is going to blow a 3-0 lead at some point in the season. The key is what do you learn from it?” Golden Knights head coach Peter DeBoer said. “That’s a very good team over there, a very resilient team with veteran, great players. It comes down to little details at key moments in the game.”
