Pens flip Caps, again, this time in OT

In Pittsburgh, the Penguins evened their season record with a 5-4 OT win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.

Sidney Crosby #87 of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored game-winner in OT

Sidney Crosby got the winner at 1:11 of the extra session.

“I think they’re all important,” Crosby said. “When you look at the games in Philadelphia, the score probably wasn’t indicative of how we played. We made some mistakes, but to come back here and get two big wins was really important.”

Casey DeSmith made 22 saves in the win.

Tom Wilson struck twice for the Caps.

“The first period I thought was one of our better periods of the year so far,” Washington head coach Peter Laviolette said. “We shot ourselves in the foot in the second period with mental mistakes from all different areas, and I thought we got outplayed in the third. … In the third after a tough second period, it was a time to get going in the right direction. Get the game back on track.

“Just don’t feel like we hit our stride. After things started to happen in the second, where it felt like we were shooting ourselves in the foot, we couldn’t get motion. We couldn’t get going.”

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Lars Eller added single markers for the Caps.

“Just can’t sleep on this team,” Eller said. “They score two and they’re back in the game. They shouldn’t have been. We should’ve closed the game there when we were on a 5-on-3 power play, I think. We just let them back in the game.

“The mistakes are what cost us a point today. I hope we learn from that. That’s probably better than letting it slide.”

Jake Guentzel Evgeni Malkin, Teddy Blueger  and  Colton Sceviour  scored for the Penguins in regulation.

Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves in the loss.

“Not too worried about the individual game right now,” Wilson said. “Just trying to play the system. We’ll obviously take them when they go in, but we’ve got to get the group going where we want to be. That’s the most important thing right now.”
