The Los Angeles Kings are in a tail spin and the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins helped them along that path Thursday night as Casey DeSmith made 28 saves to hand the Kings their fifth straight loss in 3-1 decision for the Pens.
Patric Hornqvist had two strikes in the win as the Pens improved to 25-20-3.
“He’s been showing the whole year in practice how competitive he is and how good he can play, and finally he showed it here, and good for him and good for the whole team,” Hornqvist said of DeSmith’s efforts as a rookie.
Adrian Kempe scored the lone goal for the Kings as they dropped to 24-16-5.
“Started chasing the game against a really good hockey team,” LA head coach John Stevens said. “For whatever reason in hockey when you’re down, the ice is a little bit uphill.”
Evgeni Malkin also scored for Pittsburgh.

Jonathan Quick made 28 saves in taking the loss.
“If you’re not frustrated, there’s something wrong with you, but trying to channel that frustration into that positive energy that you can use to win games, it’s going to be hard. There’s going to be ups and down, and you got to find a way to dig yourself out,” LA’s Dustin Brown said after yet another loss in the skid.
