Pens breeze past Sabres, 5-1

In Pittsburgh Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres managed success. They scored a goal to break a drought of 232:09 minutes.

That doesn’t mean they pushed back on the Pittsburgh Penguins.  In Fact, they were swept in the weekend set scoring that one goal over the two games.

Tristan Jarry made 32 saves to get the win for the Pens.

“I was excited with the challenge [of starting on consecutive nights],” Jarry said. “It’s not something that happens too often at the NHL level. They wanted to see if I could do it and I was up for the challenge.”

Evgeni Malkin, Carl Hagelin, Patric Hornqvist scored before the Sabres broke through to make it 3-1.

Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby had strikes to make it 5-1.

“I think we came with a lot of emotion,” Sabres head coach Phil Housley said. “They played for one another tonight. … We can’t make mistakes right now because of the position we’re in. We’re not getting enough run support to support mistakes.”

Jason Pominville was the lone goal scorer for the Sabres.

“I think, mentally, hopefully it feels good for the team to get one and not have to talk about this for, hopefully, a little while,” Pominville said. “We still have work to do and we know [that]. We have to be better and that was a step, but again, there are still a few more steps we need to take.”

Chad Johnson took the loss on 24 saves.

“Obviously, we have to get the puck to the net to score. I thought we did a better job of it, but we need to still get better at it. … It’s a tough one to swallow. We played hard, but there are no moral victories in this league,” the Sabres’ Jack Eichel said after the game.

It’s more than that; it’s about getting pucks and bodies to the net to make something greasy happen down low.

Taking a shot from the wing or out high on the blueline doesn’t amount to much offense in the NHL.

Throwing a little defense might help the outcome along as well.
