With Penn State playing a mere 30 miles from his home, Eamon McAdam picked a good time for his first career shutout. The Perkasie, Pa., native backstopped the No. 20 Nittany Lions to a 4-0 win over Vermont in the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff at the Wells Fargo. McAdam made 30 saves in the win — Penn State’s final tune-up before Big Ten play starts this weekend.
Power-play goals from Zach Saar in the first period and Dylan Richard in the second put Penn State ahead. Chase Berger scored his 9th of the season in the third period before Richard notched his second of the game with 32 seconds left.
Berger’s goal put him atop the Big Ten and the nation’s freshman goal-scoring list. Richard’s power-play goal was his fifth of the season, which leads the Big Ten. Penn State (8-2-3), which entered the game ranked 20th in the USCHO.com rankings, notched its first win as a ranked team after going 0-4-0 last year.
