WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Admirals goalie Jason LaBarbera made 27 saves to record his first shutout of the season and help Norfolk to a 2-0 win on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza and a sweep of their two-game series this week against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The Admirals took a 1-0 lead for the second time in as many games versus the
Penguins while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was on the power play. Max Friberg intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and led Emerson Etem up ice for a shorthanded breakaway 11:11 of the first. Penguins goalie Matt Murray got a piece of Etem’s shot with his pad, but the puck still found its way across the goal line. The tally was the first shorthanded goal allowed by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season.
Mark Cantin doubled Norfolk’s lead less than three minutes later when he skated with the puck across the blueline and floated a wrist shot through a screen and past the blocker of Murray.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had multiple scoring chances throughout the rest of game, including a four minute man-advantage early in the third, but would be held at bay by LaBarbera and the Admirals defense.
Murray stopped 29-of-31 shots for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as his record goes to 7-7-2.
