SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After going down by two, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rallied back to defeat the Syracuse Crunch, 4-3, in overtime tonight at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Ross Colton put up two goals for the Crunch as the team moves to 37-17-4-2 on the season. Syracuse finished the home-and-home season series with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 1-0-1-0.
Goaltender Martin Ouellette stopped 33-of-37 shots in net for the Crunch, while Tristan Jarry earned the win with 34 saves for the Penguins. Syracuse went 1-for-7 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.
The Crunch opened scoring just 3:37 into the game. Andy Andreoff backhanded a centering pass from beneath the goal line for Colton to redirect past Jarry. Taylor Raddysh earned a point for the secondary helper. Syracuse then doubled their lead with a power-play goal at the 10:36 mark. After getting the puck from Alex Barre-Boulet, Cory Conacher walked the blue line and passed over for Cameron Gaunce to net with a blast from the right point.
The Penguins came back within one 11:40 into the middle stanza. Jimmy Hayes won a battle for the puck along the end boards, skated it behind the cage and centered it for Linus Olund to send home from the slot. Cameron Brown recorded an assist.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton evened the score on the man-advantage 7:35 into the third period. Ouellette made the initial save on Ethan Prow’s point shot, but Joseph Blandisi was there to chip in the rebound. Adam Johnson recorded a point on the equalizer.
Colton potted his second of the night with 7:33 remaining to put the Crunch back on top. Alexander Volkov carried the puck into the zone, but lost it as he tried to get a shot off. Colton was there to pick up the loose puck and score from the slot.
The Penguins knotted the game for a second time to eventually force overtime with another power-play goal two minutes later when Hayes found a lane through traffic from the top of the right circle.
Sam Miletic completed the comeback victory for the Penguins when he cleaned up a rebound 1:34 into the extra frame with the help of Blandisi and Kevin Czuczman.
