Penguins fall to Devils in preseason opener

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins began their 2016 exhibition schedule at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Thursday night, but suffered a loss at the hands of the Albany Devils.

Albany scored four power play goals in what became a 4-1 victory for the Devils.

On their third power play of the game, the Devils scored the game’s opening goal when Jan Mandát tipped in a shot from Mathieu Brodeur at 12:41 of the first period.Albany Devils logo

Jarrett Burton pulled the score into a 1-1 tie by redirecting shot from the point into the Devils’ net at 12:02 of the second period.

Another man advantage marker put Albany back on top at 15:12 of the middle frame, this time with John Quenneville finishing the play.

A third power play goal lifted the Devils into a 3-1 lead. Ben Sexton was the man responsible for Albany’s third tally, knocking a loose puck into the Penguins net 1:14 into the third period.

Ty Loney scored the Devils’ fourth power play goal of the game with 8.2 remaining in regulation, bringing the game to its final score of 4-1.

Albany finished the night four-for-seven on the man advantage, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton did not convert on any of its six man advantage opportunities.

Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith made 12 saves on 13 shots faced before passing the baton to Leland Irving at the midway point of the contest. Irving started his night with two point-blank saves on shorthanded scoring chances by the Devils, and went on to stop 11 of 14 shots.
