Pastrnak’s OT goal lifts Boston over Senators, 3-2

In Ottawa, David Pastrnak scored midway through extra time on Saturday to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win over the Senators.“It’s been a little bit of a grind lately,” Pastrnak said. “It was a nice goal, but overall, it’s a big win for us to end the [four-game] road trip. We know it wasn’t pretty. … You never want to come back home from the road trip without wins. So today was a big one.”

Jeremy Swayman made 29 saves in the Boston win.

Nick Holden scored for the Senators in the third period to get the even at 2-2, and force the extra session.

Jake DeBrusk and Brandon Carlo were the Bruins strikers in regulation.

“I liked it,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said of DeBrusk’s game. “Much more involved, competitive. Hung onto pucks in the [offensive] zone. He has talent offensively. We asked him to be more competitive. These are some of the kinds of examples [being] on the puck in the O zone.”

The Bruins improved to 28-17-4.

“I just fell on the ice right in front of the net there,” Carlo said. “As I was going down, I caught my forearm a little bit. Luckily, it was a really nice clean cut and in the right spot. It didn’t reach all the way to the muscle. That was a good thing.”

Tim Stutzle scored for Ottawa, his goal tied the game, 1-1.

“We gave ourselves a 60-minute effort there,” the Senators’ Brady Tkachuk said. “Get us to overtime, and then anything happens in 3-on-3. … I think there were a lot of great efforts tonight. Everybody stepped up against a great team that’s been a great team for a bunch of years now. It was definitely a fun one to be a part of, but obviously we wish we could get that extra point.”

The Senators fell to 18-25-5.

“A lot of things I was happy with,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. “I thought we turned it over too much, but the compete level was really high. That was probably one of the more physical games in the last month, I’d say.”

Anton Forsberg made 30 saves in the Sens loss.

“I thought we played well,” Forsberg said. “Played really well. It was a really good hockey game out there. It’s a tough loss. It’s on me. I thought we battled hard. We battled back. I thought it was a great hockey game.”
