In Boston, David Pastrnak snapped a 2-2 tie with the Winnipeg Jets in the third period to send the Bruins to a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon.
“It’s been a little bit of a whirlwind. I didn’t really expect to play today either,” Boston’s Brad Marchand said. “It’s hard to sit out a game. It’s going to take a lot to sit out if you feel like you can play through it. Part of the culture in this organization is if you feel you can play, you’ve got to battle through it. You almost feel like you’re letting the guys down if you sit out.”
Tuukka Rask made 22 saves in the Bruins win.
Boston improved to 24-12-2.
The Jets’ Jansen Harkins and Andrew Copp scored in the first stanza for a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
“We had some opportunities,” Jets coach Dave Lowry said. “They capitalized on theirs. We had some good chances, and the difference is they scored one more goal. That just shows you how tough it is to win in the National Hockey League, and the difference is one shot. We did a lot of really good things here in this game today. And the good thing is, we get an opportunity to get back at it again tomorrow (against the Pittsburgh Penguins).”
Winnipeg fell to 17-14-6.
Charlie Coyle h also scored for the Bruins, his second period goal tied the game, 2-2.
“If you want to be a good team, you need contributions from everyone, and tonight [Coyle’s line] did their job, and then some, offensively,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “I liked all three of [Steen, Coyle and Jake DeBrusk]. They were a big part of our win. Again, it’s always good for team building and success when different lines contribute, and they were certainly, I would say, our best tonight.”
Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves in the Jets loss.
“I didn’t think today was going to be a game that I would be playing in, so it was good to be back for sure,” Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler said. “I think there was a lot of good in that game for our team. One shot away really from that looking like a pretty darn good road win. Unfortunately, there’s no moral victories right now. We need to win games. So that was a tough way to lose.”
